The Therapist's Toolkit
Questions, Reflections and Practice Ideas for Trainee and Qualified Therapists
Every therapist develops their own way of working.
Their own rhythm.
Their own questions.
Their own way of sitting with uncertainty.
Over the years I've collected questions, reflections, metaphors and practical ideas that have proved useful in the therapy room. Some emerged from training. Some from supervision. Many from conversations with clients who helped me see things differently.
This resource isn't intended to tell you how therapy should be done.
It isn't a script.
It isn't a model.
And it certainly isn't a replacement for your own judgement, experience, training or supervision.
Instead, think of it as a collection of prompts, perspectives and practice ideas that you can return to whenever you need them.
Whether you're preparing for your first placement session, building confidence as a newly qualified therapist, or simply looking for a fresh way of approaching a familiar conversation, I hope you'll find something useful here.

Why I Created This
When I was training, I spent a lot of time looking for practical resources.
Not because I wanted shortcuts.
Because I wanted reassurance.
I wanted examples.
Ideas.
Questions.
Different ways of thinking.
Most trainees know far more than they think they do. What they're often looking for is something that helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.
This toolkit is my attempt to offer that bridge.
Take what helps.
Adapt what doesn't.
Trust your own style.
And remember that some of the most meaningful moments in therapy happen not because we asked the perfect question, but because we stayed present long enough for something important to emerge.
About Stuart Walker
I'm an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist based in Manchester, working both in person and online across the UK.
My work focuses primarily on men's mental health, fatherhood, grief and bereavement, neurodivergence, identity and life transitions.
Alongside private practice, I've worked extensively in suicide bereavement support and continue to be fascinated by the conversations that happen underneath the surface. The ones that begin with work, football, parenting or everyday life and gradually find their way to something more important. I also work with trainee and newly qualified counsellors seeking personal therapy during training.
Welcome to the toolkit.
I hope you find something useful.
Personal therapy for trainee counsellors
I also work with trainee and newly qualified counsellors who are completing the personal therapy requirements of their training.
Sessions are charged at a reduced trainee rate of £40 per session.
Where required, I am happy to provide confirmation of attendance for training records and personal therapy hour logs.
If you're unsure whether I meet your course requirements, please feel free to get in touch before booking.
