Psychotherapy & Counselling in Manchester and Online UK

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy can sound more mysterious than it needs to.

I'm Stuart Walker, an MBACP Registered Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist based in Manchester, working online with adults across the UK.

For me, it isn't about analysing you from across the room or deciding what your experiences mean.

It's a conversation.

We might begin with what's happening in your life now and gradually notice connections to relationships, experiences or ways of coping that have developed over time.

Some of those patterns may have protected you. Some may still be useful. Others may no longer fit the life you're living.

The aim isn't to dismantle everything that has made you who you are.

It's to understand it.

And from that understanding, something different may become possible.

Who is Psychotherapy For?

You might come to psychotherapy because something specific has happened.

A relationship has changed. Work has become difficult. You've experienced a loss. Fatherhood has shifted something. You've recognised ADHD or autism later in life. Anxiety, stress or low mood has become harder to ignore.

But you might also arrive with something much less defined.

Why do I keep doing this?

Why does this relationship affect me so much?

Why am I successful at things that don't seem to make me happy?

Why do I find it so difficult to let people close?

Who am I when I'm not doing what everybody needs me to do?

Those are psychotherapy questions too.

Integrative Psychotherapy: An Approach Built Around You

I'm an integrative psychotherapist, which means I don't expect every person to fit one particular theory or model.

Different ideas can help us understand different parts of human experience, but the starting point is always the person sitting in front of me.

Our work might be reflective or practical. We might spend time with something happening today and, at another point, find ourselves talking about something that happened years ago.

There can be difficult conversations.

There can also be humour.

Psychotherapy is allowed to contain both.

How I Work

Psychotherapy that begins with you

Some people find their way into psychotherapy through a particular part of their lives.

Grief & Bereavement Counselling →
Neurodivergent Counselling & Psychotherapy →

You don't need to decide which category you belong in. These are simply places where conversations sometimes begin.

Before you decide

Psychotherapy is relational. How it feels to sit with the person you're talking to matters.

That's why I offer a free 30-minute introductory conversation before you decide whether you'd like to begin.

There's no assessment to pass and no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what you want from therapy.

We can meet, talk a little about what has brought you here, and see whether working together feels right.

Not sure this quite describes what you're experiencing?
